Profit Digest
What is profit?
This seems to be a ridiculous question to ask of business
people, but is it? The wide open economic expansion of the 90s has caused
business people around the world to rethink the rules of business. Not
because of the expansion but the contraction which followed. Businesses
began to reduce expenses in order to increase profits, which led to their
vendors losing revenues, which caused them to cut costs, and the cycle
continues in a downward spiral. You cannot count on current business to
continue much less expand under the old rules. The costs of finding and
developing customers is becoming horrendous, only to have that small percentage
of success stop ordering.
Profit is the maximization of resources, through reducing costs, while receiving
maximum potential revenues. The single largest resource expenditure, except
for the product cost, is sales and marketing. This area continually expends
resources, in both dollars and time consumption, without management being
able to accurately track results. Management continually addresses manufacturing
costs, product costs and labor costs but cannot accurately track sales
and marketing.
